In 1966, Vittorio Cerea and his wife Bruna opened a restaurant in Bergamo at a time when nobody served fish in northern Italy. The gamble worked. By 2010, Da Vittorio had three Michelin stars — and the five Cerea children who now run it are building one of the most ambitious family gastronomic empires in Italy, all while making sure every guest feels welcome enough to come back.
The Story
Bergamo, 1966. Fish everyone was eating meat. A family that never left.
Vittorio Cerea was young and in love and passionate about food when he and his wife Bruna opened Da Vittorio in Bergamo in 1966. The decision to build the restaurant's reputation around fish was almost heretical at the time — northern Italy was meat country, and fish belonged on the coast. The gamble took over a decade to be rewarded: the first Michelin star arrived in 1978. A second followed in 1996. By the time Vittorio died in 2005 — just before the restaurant relocated from Bergamo to a twenty-five-acre park at Brusaporto in the Cantalupa hills — the foundation of something extraordinary had been laid.
The third Michelin star came in 2010, under the collective stewardship of the five Cerea children: Enrico ("Chicco") and Roberto ("Bobo") in the kitchen; Francesco overseeing the wine cellar and catering; Rossella directing hospitality at the restaurant and hotel; and Barbara running Cavour 1880, the family's café-pasticceria in Bergamo Alta. Bruna Cerea — the matriarch, always impeccably dressed, accompanied by two small dogs — is still present on property, greeting tables, making rounds. The whole enterprise remains a family affair.
The current address — a gorgeous villa in the Cantalupa hills, surrounded by parkland, with a ten-room hotel, a swimming pool, a function space, and the DaV Pastry Lab — is where Da Vittorio has stood since 2005, and it is exactly the kind of setting Vittorio imagined but just managed to see before he died. Today the group spans Shanghai, Paris, St. Moritz, Portofino, and Milan, totalling nine Michelin stars across all locations. The Brusaporto restaurant remains the heart of everything.
The Food & Philosophy
Comfort and generosity at the highest level. The food is the autobiography of a family.
Michelin describes Da Vittorio as retaining unchanged the warmth of its pleasantly family-run management — a note that sounds like faint praise until you eat there and understand that it is the most accurate description of the restaurant's singular quality. Da Vittorio produces Michelin three-star cooking that does not feel like a temple visit. The atmosphere is warm, the service is personal, the tableside preparations are theatrical without being precious, and the generosity of the kitchen is palpable from the first amuse-bouche to the last petits fours cone.
Chicco Cerea has long incorporated Eastern influences into his Italian repertoire — a reflection of his frequent visits to the family's Chinese locations. The giant grilled Sicilian prawn with miso foam, beetroot brunoise, and katsuobushi gel is a dish that exists because a Bergamo fish cook spent years eating in Shanghai. The tableside pasta preparations — Paccheri Da Vittorio, the signature prepared at the table — are among the most celebrated dishes in the Michelin world. The cheese trolley. The bread. The petit fours trolley with its hazelnut pastry cones filled tableside. The legendary panettone. The exquisite sourcing: Chicco grew up waking at 3am with his father to secure the finest fish and artichokes at the market, paying double for what was best. That instinct runs through everything.
Not just a restaurant. It is a gastronomic institution — a place where significant things happen to the people who come here, and where the family makes sure they feel it.
ELITE TRAVELER
The wine cellar is overseen by Francesco Cerea and includes 'Faber', a prestigious red made with grapes from the family's own vineyards. The wine list is encyclopaedic and carefully curated rather than ostentatious. Barack Obama ate here in 2017, with former Italian prime ministers and Donatella Versace. The guest book of Da Vittorio is effectively the guest book of modern Italy's cultural and political life — and the family treats each table with the same warmth regardless of who is sitting there.
The Signatures
The dishes the Cerea brothers have been refining since before most chefs were born.
Paccheri Da Vittorio — Tableside
The most celebrated dish in the restaurant's history: large tubular pasta tossed tableside by Chicco or Bobo in a preparation that requires speed, heat, and a confidence born of thousands of repetitions. The pasta itself is made in-house. The sauce is the kitchen's most carefully protected formula. Watching it made is part of why you came.
Giant Sicilian Prawn, Miso Foam, Katsuobushi
The Eastern influence that has threaded through Chicco's cooking since the Shanghai years: a single enormous Sicilian prawn grilled to the precise point of translucence, with miso foam that adds salinity to sweetness, beetroot brunoise for colour and acidity, and katsuobushi gel for depth. East and West as a coherent dish, not a conceptual exercise.
The Cheese Trolley
Three local Bergamo cheeses as a standard — goat, aged, and fresh — served with accompaniments that reflect the region's artisanal production. The trolley at Da Vittorio is not a token gesture. It is a considered service, presented by staff who know the provenance of every cheese and can explain it without recourse to a card.
Petit Fours Cone — Tableside Hazelnut
The final service that guests consistently name first when describing the Da Vittorio experience: a pastry cone filled tableside with hazelnut cream, presented alongside the petit fours trolley with its candy floss and confections. A theatrical close to a theatrical meal. The cone is warm. The cream is cold. It is as good as the reviews say.
The Risotto — Guinea Fowl, Foie Gras, Parmigiano
A dish that shows the kitchen's Italian classical confidence: risotto with guinea fowl ragout, seared foie gras on a Parmigiano base, finished with a touch of juniper that cuts the richness without disturbing it. An irresistibly indulgent dish that pulls together the region's dairy tradition and the kitchen's love of luxury ingredients without either dominating the other.
The Da Vittorio Panettone
The house panettone — produced by the DaV Pastry Lab — is as soft and precisely made as the best artisan panettone in Italy. It arrives as part of the meal's final service and represents the kitchen's approach to the sweet register: not an afterthought, but a production. Take one home if the shop has them available. The waiting list is real.
Before You Go
Everything practical, plainly told
- Address: Via Cantalupa 17, 24060 Brusaporto (BG), Lombardy, Italy
- Phone: +39 035 681024
- Website: davittorio.com
- Getting There: Brusaporto is approximately 45 minutes from Milan Malpensa Airport and 25 minutes from Bergamo Orio al Serio Airport by car. The restaurant offers a private transfer service from Milan. Bergamo itself is 8km away. A hire car or taxi is the practical approach — no realistic public transport connection exists from Milan or Bergamo to the restaurant's hilltop position in the Cantalupa hills.
- Bookings: Via davittorio.com or by phone. Book 4–8 weeks ahead for most evenings; 2–3 months for weekend dinners in high season (April–June, September–October). The Express Lunch at €80 per person is the most accessible entry point and provides an extraordinary price-to-quality ratio for a three-star experience.
- Price: The Express Lunch menu (business menu) runs from approximately €80 per person. Full tasting menus for dinner range from approximately €200–€280 per person for food. Wine pairing additional. Staying overnight in the ten-room hotel and having dinner is the most complete way to experience Da Vittorio — morning includes one of the finest hotel breakfasts in Lombardy.
- Staying Over: The Relais & Châteaux hotel at the Brusaporto villa has ten rooms and suites in the main building, with garden views and the same level of care applied to the restaurant. Book as a package with dinner for the most coherent experience. The post-lunch nap in a room with views over the Cantalupa hills is one of the great small pleasures available within driving distance of Milan.
Things Worth Knowing
Before you take your seat in the hills above Bergamo
- The Express Lunch is one of the great values in three-star dining anywhere in Italy — At approximately €80 per person for food, the Da Vittorio business lunch menu delivers the kitchen's cooking, the tableside preparations, and the warmth of the family service at a fraction of the dinner tasting menu price. For guests visiting the area who want the experience without the full commitment, this is the correct choice.
- Book the full-day version: arrive for lunch, stay the night, have breakfast — Da Vittorio makes most sense as a destination rather than a drive from Milan. The property is beautiful, the service extends through breakfast the following morning, and leaving a three-star villa the night after dinner to drive back to the city is an unnecessary diminishment of the experience.
- Pay attention during the tableside preparations — The Paccheri tableside and the petit fours cone are performances by people who have done them thousands of times and still care about doing them correctly. Watching closely is not intrusive — it is what the kitchen designed those moments for.
- Explore Bergamo Alta before or after — The upper city of Bergamo — 8km from the restaurant, accessible by funicular — is one of the most beautiful medieval hilltown centres in northern Italy and justifies a half-day at minimum. Combine with a visit to the Da Vittorio sweet shop in Città Alta. The combination of the city and the restaurant makes for one of the best day trips available within range of Milan.
Da Vittorio isn’t a meal—it’s a lineage. A place where Bergamo’s alleys meet Brusaporto’s grandeur, where lobster bisque tastes like legacy, and every bite whispers Vittorio’s mantra: “Fish is our past, family our future.” For couples craving a taste of Italy’s soul, this hillside jewel is where Lombard tradition wears three Michelin stars with pride.
